          I’m back at The Nest on January 7th for a six-week term. You can book individual classes or a block. As always, if you book the block you get a 10% discount and just a gentle reminder to book as soon as you can, classes last term were all fully booked!

          I have some news, on my list of ‘things that have never been’ in 2026 is a brand new class!

          Remember ages ago when I asked you to be on your best behaviour as I was being observed… Well, they offered me the job, I am now working for St. Helens Wellbeing… as their yoga teacher, I haven’t completely lost my mind and added a third job.
         &#xD;

    Do you know a young person aged 11+ who would benefit from attending yoga but can't access it currently due to financial barriers, the YMCA and St. Helens Inequalities Funding Commission may have the answer for you! 
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    "In partnership and funded by the St Helens Inequalities Commission we are launching a new way of supporting children and young people in the community to engage in positive activities.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    A new bursary scheme aims to support young people and their families who are struggling to afford the fees for the activities they want to do, there may be barriers relating to kit, travel expenses or sessions themselves.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    We have been given a Grant of £40,000 from the St Helens Inequalities Commission to run the scheme the majority of which will go directly to funding young people.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    Organisations or families can nominate young people and if selected we will pay the funds directly to the organisation that is running the activity.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    The nomination process is a simple online form

    We hope this bursary will help young people take part in activities they previously could not, giving them such confidence boost, and provide the opportunity to be with friends and fulfil their potential creatively and physically.

  It varies throughout the year, at Christmas we make cards, in summer we made dream catchers, and at Halloween we'll make some spooky decorations. Quite often the little ones, and big ones spend time colouring together. This week we made positive affirmation posters.

   Yes, if you any concerns about your little one participating in the class, please get in touch beforehand and we can discuss what works best for you and your little one. I trained with Special Yoga to try to make my classes as accessible as possible and have worked with children with SEND for many years.

  If you trained as a children's yoga teacher and have no adult training, this one is for you! 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  There are a lot of teacher trainings available at the moment, so here are some tips for those who feel overwhelmed with the choice.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  Who to train with? - Hopefully you have a regular teacher who can offer you some advice, lots of us are happy to give recommendations as we'll have experience not only with our initial training but with CPDs with various teachers and 'schools'.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  What to look for? - Some kind of accreditation, I trained with the 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;a href="https://www.bwy.org.uk/" target="_top"&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
      British Wheel of Yoga
    
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/a&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  , they are Ofqual accredited but there are others out there. I've trained with a courses accredited by both Yoga Alliance UK and The Independent Yoga Network. Yoga Alliance UK have lots of teacher trainings up and down the country, if you chose that option it may be worth reading reviews of the specific course and leaders you've been looking at. The Independent Yoga Network no longer exists and I'm unaware if another organisation has taken up their members. 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  Course Curriculum - Your course may include - Anatomy &amp;amp; Physiology and Yoga Philosophy, as well as the usual Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathing), Meditation &amp;amp; Relaxation and class planning, including teaching and progression. Hopefully there will be a little bit of business in there too, to help guide you if you decide to teach regularly. 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  How long? - Intensives can take a few days, other courses can take between 1, 2 and 3 years. Courses can take up to 500+ hours, that can include your time learning and also your experience teaching. Think about how you learn personally, whether you learn better with lots of information all at once or whether you learn better with less information over a longer period.  There are pros and cons to both, I found it better to learn over a longer period of time and that fitted in well with my circumstances, other people will have different time constraints and factors they need to take into consideration. 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  How much? - Now this varies... A lot! A face-to-face teaching of around 200 hours can range from £2000-£3000, a 300 - 500 hour course can cost between £3000 - £4500, many course leaders provide payment plans. You also need to factor in the cost of text books - The Bhavagad Gita, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, etc. stationary, and if you don't already own one, a laptop or device to do you work.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  Extra courses 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  After all that training you may wonder why you would need any further training but... if you are working in schools, you will probably work with students with a diverse range of educational needs, it's better to be overtrained than undertrained!
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;a href="https://www.specialyoga.co.uk/" target="_top"&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
      Special Yoga
    
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/a&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
   (others are available) offer trainings to make sure your teachings are as inclusive as they can be, so my advice would be, if you haven't had extra training, get it :)
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  And finally, finally.. If you don't feel as though you need any further training (well done!) but would like to browse some free courses I can highly recommend the

            Family yoga is suitable for those age 3+, you do need to bring a little one with you if you’d like to attend :) this class will be held on Sunday 11th February at 10am.

            Vinyasa Flow is a faster paced class, linking breath to movement. You can expect traditional flows as well as fun (hopefully) and dynamic flows to increase your heart rate and build strength. This class is aimed at those who have a strong, regular practice and is on Friday 9th February at 7pm.

          &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
          &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
          &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
            
                            
            Suitable for all is our Hatha class which will return on the Wednesday 10th January at 7pm for a short 5 week term.

                    People often ask me how I started teaching yoga to children in school and it was a mixture of being in the right place at the right time, meeting the right people (
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;

  ), some good luck and little bit of hard work.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  So I thought I'd write something to point some of you in the school direction, if that's where you're thinking of going.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
    Choosing a Children's Yoga Teacher course,
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
   research and ask for recommendations. There are lots different options and courses available, face to face, online or a mixture of the two. You may wish to go down the franchise direction, especially if you're brand new to this. It may seem like the safer option, with the promise to help you get your business off the ground and offering ongoing support, but it can also be the most expensive option, there's the initial cost and the franchise fee, and there are often (not always) limits to the style you teach and the area you teach in. Ask questions, check out the websites, look at the classes they have available and ask how many successful franchisees they have.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  If you prefer you can set up on your own and if I can do it, anyone can :) This offers you more freedom to teach the way you'd like to and there are then no restrictions on the areas you can cover. If you're worried about setting up and ongoing support and it isn't offered by your course tutor or course mates, there are lots of online communities that can offer it, join them and start asking questions, it's free!
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  If you are setting up on your own, one of the biggest upfront costs, after training, is equipment, think mats. This year I've replaced my mats, after 3 years of picky hands and wear and tear. Don't spend a fortune, I've found anything thicker than 4mm is a blank canvas for little hands, to be picked, poked and scratched to within an inch of it's life... which itself can cause a safety issue, so let's move on to risk assessments. You can write your own or use an online template, if you're a member of a yoga organisation they might provide them for you.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
    Approaching Schools - 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  This is the hardest bit, especially if you're like me and allergic to mithering. Research who you think would be the best staff member to approach, maybe the school have a specific person who deals with well-being, it might be the pastoral lead, or the medical assistant, it could even be the head of PE, then address your correspondence to them. If you have the wrong person, you'll probably be directed to the correct person in the end... And please don't worry if you don't get a response, schools are busy places, your email may have gone unnoticed, or they could already have a yoga teacher, wouldn't that be amazing!
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
    Must Haves -
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
   If you are going to be on your own at any point with the children you are going to need an enhanced DBS. You can't apply for one yourself, so speak to your course tutor, if they don't provide them, they may suggest an umbrella company. If all that fails, speak to your school or nursery  to see if they could apply on your behalf.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  I'm putting insurance in the Must Haves, although you're probably not going to harm anyone by teaching them yoga, it's good to know your students are covered in the very unlikely event that something goes wrong. 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
    Maybes - 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  Not all settings will 'need' you to have the following but it's always good to be prepared.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  Safeguarding Training - mine is with the

    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;a href="https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/training" target="_top"&gt;&#xD;

      &lt;/a&gt;&#xD;

   they offer a range of different options to suit almost everyone. There are other providers, research and ask for recommendations.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  First Aid - part of the requirements of my membership with the 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;a href="https://www.bwy.org.uk/" target="_top"&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
      British Wheel of Yoga
    
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/a&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
   is to keep an up-to-date First Aid certificate, they often organise first aid days for members and non-members.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

                    I know it looks like I only have one class per week, but this yoga teaching has accidentally turned into my full time job. I now work predominantly in schools, teaching nursery all the way up to college, that's 3 - 18 in old money!

  I started practicing yoga as a super anxious teenager, back when the internet was in it infancy and amazon had just started selling books and DVDs. My first experience of a sun salutation was a black and white page printed off the internet stuck to the back of my bedroom door and it's been my companion through life's ups and downs ever since.

    What does yoga in school look like...

    &lt;!--StartFragment--&gt;                          A typical yoga class would include traditional yoga poses, a variety of breathing techniques, some aspects of mindfulness and relaxation, all of which are designed to bring some calm into the classroom. I can teach whole classes, small groups or one to one.

    Online classes will continue throughout the year, 3 classes per week - a mix or Live and recorded - mini classes, Meditations, Pranayama/breathwork, Hatha, Vinyasa, Core, Restorative and Relaxation. We have one more Live class on Wednesday 5th January before Live classes return to Saturday mornings the following week, 15th January.

If you have found your practice has been on the back burner for a while, remember to take some time for yourself, even if it’s not yoga, having a bath, reading a book, going for a coffee or catching up with your friends, we all need some me time, take the opportunity when you can.

    Just a quick update about classes.

    Online classes continue over December, those of you who are enjoying the core classes will have a month off while we explore relaxation, meditation &amp;amp; pranayama.

              Well the weather has well and truly changed, and Autumn has arrived with the same rainy gusto of Summer!

            With that in mind, please do layer up if your coming to face to face classes. Bring a blanket for relaxation, and a pillow too if you really want to get comfortable :)

            Our Face to Face classes will be having a break mid October for half term, so on October 27th there will be no class at The Nest. We return November 3rd, classes will be available to book next week.

              &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
                
                                
              There will be no online class on October 16th. I’m taking my own advice, slowing down, taking some time off and relaxing!

            &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
              
                              
            Online classes are still only £10 per month, in October there will 4 LIVE classes held on the Saturdays throughout the month, you’ll also get recorded hatha, vinyasa, core or relaxation classes sent to your inboxes so keep your eye out!                     Look what happened during lockdown 2020, I signed up to yet another course... and qualified!

  I went down to Birmingham before Covid was a thing to do their face-to-face autism and ADHD course with the lovely Daniella and Dhara. Lock down provided me with an opportunity I didn't want to miss. It was such a wonderful journey and I felt supported by the team all the way though the course. I highly recommend their online courses, and of course their face-to-face course when things get back to the 'new normal'.

    It’s February in a few days and if you hadn’t noticed already our classes throughout January are based around balance and breath. I read the most amazing book about breath over the Christmas break, my Dad bought it for me, and when I say that, I mean I bought it for me and he transferred the money. I wrapped it up, then I gave it to him and he gave it back to me for Christmas… Modern gift giving - no surprises but no disappointment either!

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    Here’s the book if you’re interested it’s called Breath by James Nestor and it’s for those of you who like your yoga (although not technically a yoga book) with a side of science.

    &lt;!--StartFragment--&gt;                            We’ll continue exploring different breathing practices for the next few months, yes there are a lot to get through! Each practice will have a Youtube video for you to follow, these will be available to those who subscribe to online classes!

                    I can't believe I'm still teaching online 9 months after I started, on my phone, in my living room, practically begging my children to be quiet while I had an hour here and there to teach!

  I have to say I have enjoyed teaching you from my living room and I'm so pleased you're still with me. I'm grateful to the newcomers, the drop ins and the regulars, you all make me a better teacher and our interactions have been one of my highlights during lockdown season 1, lockdown season 2 and all the local lockdowns and tiers. What a year!

                    One of the best ways I've found to get the little ones to focus on their breath is to use a mindfulness glitter jar.  All of the children who attended my first summer workshops got to take home their own mini version! 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  I'm posting the ingredients so you can make your own if you'd like to, it may help with the breathing exercises we use in mindfulness, but its definitely not essential. It's also a really good visual aid when taking about emotions and how mindfulness can help us to manage them. 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  So, depending on the size of the jar, you'll have to work out what is the best ratios to use for you.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  You'll need
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      A Jar - jam jar, coffee jar, etc. washed and without the labels... just remember it needs a good lid! (I used a glue gun to stick the lids down so little hands couldn't open them!)
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Clear Glue, you can use PVA glue but clear glue worked better for us.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Glitter, any colour.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Water.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Optional food colouring.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  
                  
  Just remember the more glue you use the longer it will take for the glitter to settle. 
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  
                  
  ﻿And also, never put glitter down the drain!

  May has see the start of our journey with the chakras, ending with Ustrasana/Camel class followed by Metta Medatation, it's also the month that I've started my second course with Special Yoga, so I have a lot to be grateful for!

  As part of the Science Of Well-Being course I'm taking online, I'm doing a gratitude journal, and I say journal in the loosest form, it's a note book :)

  Gratitude has lots of positive benefits, it increases our mood, lowers stress, strengthens our immune system, lowers our blood pressure and helps us to build stronger social connections.   We have moved online! There's a sentence I never thought I'd write, considering how much I dislike having my photo taken... and also the sound of my own voice, but we've got to push out of our comfort zones sometimes! :)

I'll try to keep the online classes the same time as our regular classes so Friday's class would be 10am and Wednesday class would be 7pm.

                    No more lazy Sunday mornings for me... a beginners class is now on the timetable at The Studio Standish. Class starts at 9:15am and is suitable for absolute beginners, not-so frequent yogis, regular class goers and enlightened yogis! We will focus on the basics, introducing breath to movement, alignment in asana, beginners pranayama techniques and easy to follow guided relaxations. So if you'd like to dip your toes in the yogi waters come down to the Studio, they're a lovely bunch!

  A little later at 10:30am we have Family Yoga so if you want to try yoga and can't get a sitter this is the class for you! Spend some time with your little one stretching, strengthening, relaxing and hopefully laughing together.                     The Boat House are changing their opening times and are no longer opening Friday mornings, so one of our lovely yogis has found us a new venue, thanks Jan!

  The new venue is Haydock Cricket Club which is just up the road, admittedly it is a very long road! Class starts at the same time 10am.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  From the Boat House/Toby Carvery drive down the East Lancs, through two sets of traffic lights, past the car wash then take the slip road on the left. 
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ol&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      At the first roundabout take the first exit.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;

      The second round about take the second exit.

      At the third roundabout take the first exit.

  The car park and golf club is at the end of this road. go up the steps, through the door and up the stairs. It sounds more complicated than it is believe me!

                    As I've just turned 40 I thought it was about time I tried one of these festivals. I've long wondered why anyone would want to spend the weekend in a field with temporary toilets and tent and now I get to experience it first hand. Lucky me!

  I'm looking forward to sharing this journey with one of my favourite yoga people, the lovely Sally from Little Bird Yoga, that's the car journey, the teaching journey and the journey to the AirBNB... I am not a camper and luckily Sally didn't take much persuading :)

    Benefits of Yoga outside?

  There are many benefits of yoga, improved strength, flexibility and balance are just three of them, add that to the benefits of exercising outside, and you get a double dose of goodness! Studies have shown that exercising outdoors can help to boost self-esteem and mood and (if we're lucky) you can boost your vitamin D too!
